Mets to face Marlins ace in divisional clash

08/24/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Florida Marlins ace Josh Johnson will try to win consecutive starts for the first time in over a month when he takes the mound tonight in the opener of a three-game road series versus the New York Mets.

Johnson was 0-2 with a 4.99 earned run average in a span of five starts before beating Pittsburgh on the road last Wednesday. He held the Pirates to a pair of runs and seven hits in eight innings, just one start after lasting 3 2/3 frames in a loss at Cincinnati on August 13.

The right-hander and NL Cy Young candidate is 11-5 in 25 starts this season to go along with a 2.27 ERA. Johnson, who hasn't won back-to-back starts since mid-July, is 7-1 in 11 career matchups against the Mets.

Florida will also visit Atlanta on the trek and had a five-game winning streak halted in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Houston in the finale of a three-game series. Gaby Sanchez homered and Cody Ross had a team-high two hits for the Marlins, who got five innings of one-run ball out of starter Andrew Miller.

"You're always a little bit nervous before a start, but I felt pretty good, felt really prepared for it and to go out there and have the confidence," Miller said after his first major league appearance of the season. "I felt confident and it carried over for me."

Jose Veras was dealt the loss for allowing Hunter Pence's go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth. Florida is 7 1/2 games off the NL Wild Card lead.

New York will begin a six-game homestand versus Florida and Houston on Tuesday and has lost five of its last nine games.

The Mets are coming off Sunday's 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh in which Johan Santana delivered eight innings of one-run ball and nine strikeouts in a losing cause. David Wright drove in the team's only run and both Jose Reyes and Ike Davis ended with two hits for New York, which is eight games off the pace in the Wild Card race.

"It was a tough one," said Santana. "I made a couple of mistakes and it changed the whole ball game."

Taking the ball for the Mets tonight will be knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who is 2-1 over his last three decisions. Dickey did not record a decision his past time out in a 3-2 win at Houston last Wednesday, when he was reached for two runs and nine hits through 8 1/3 innings.

The right-hander, who was coming off a 1-0 shutout of Philadelphia, dropped to 8-5 with a 2.41 earned run average in 18 starts this season. Dickey is 2-2 in five career games (three starts) against the Marlins.

Florida has taken eight of 13 meetings with New York so far this season, but the Mets have won four of the last six games in this series.

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.

HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.

The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.

RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.

First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.

The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.

These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.

New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
